Brisbane printer, The Printing Office, achieves ISO 14001.

The certification is the next stage in TPO’s push for greener credentials. The company is already FSC, PEFC, SGP Level 3 and ISO 9001-certified. Compliance Australia Certification Services granted TPO ISO 14001 certification mid this year.

Joe Clouston, founder of TPO, said that the push reflected his long-term commitment to running the business based on green principles. “Printing has traditionally been seen as a dirty business, but it doesn’t have to be,” he said. “Our goal has been to operate with as little impact on the environment as possible, and to do this in a way that can be measured and with the benefits passed directly on to customers.”

Recently, the company’s efforts drew the attention of Federal parliamentarian and opposition spokesman on climate change, Andrew Robb, who took a tour of the premises and was impressed by what he saw.

“TPO has shown that you can make very substantial improvements to your environmental performance simply by being thoughtful and dedicated in the way you go about your business,” Robb said.

According to Clouston, some of the key steps TPO has taken to reduce its environmental impact include strategies such as retraining all staff in power saving habits and recycling all timber pallets, plastic strapping and wrapping and pre- and post-print paper waste.
